loverdeWelcome to the Diocese of Arlington! ¡Bienvenido a la Diócesis de Arlington! Welcome to one of the youngest and fastest growing dioceses in the United States. Established by the Holy See on August 13, 1974, the Diocese of Arlington has grown from 136,000 Catholics at its founding to nearly 400,000 today; 19.8 percent of the population in the diocese is Catholic, up from 15.4 percent in 1998. In the past ten years alone, we have grown 42 percent. Our diocese spans 21 counties, bordered by the Potomac River on the north and east, West Virginia on the west, and the far reaches of Shenandoah, Page, Madison, Orange, and Spotsylvania counties along the Rappahannock River on the south. Gifted with a rich diversity of ethnic cultures, a variety of military and government leaders, academic and entrepreneurial leaders and many priestly vocations, the men and women who comprise this dynamic Catholic Diocese contribute to our mission of making Christ known and loved everywhere. In 2001, we launched our first ever capital campaign to meet the needs of today while creating endowments and funding projects to plan for the needs of future generations. The Rooted in Faith ~ Forward in Hope surpassed its initial $75 million goal and raised $115 million in pledged funds to help fund construction for two new Catholic High Schools, endowments for Catholic school tuition to ensure that the cost of Catholic education does not prohibit school children from attending, endowments for faculty development for continuing education and professional development to ensure our school children are taught by first-rate professionals, as well as, create endowments for religious education and youth ministry within the Diocese of Arlington. To continue the Diocese of Arlington's outreach to those in need, the Capital Campaign will enable us to create an endowment to fund the myriad of needed charitable outreach programs administered by the Diocese of Arlington's Catholic Charities Office, will construct an emergency shelter for homeless families in our area and allow us to renovate Christ House, which serves as a homeless shelter for men and a soup kitchen for the poor. In response to our explosive growth, the Diocese of Arlington through the Rooted in Faith ~ Forward in Hope Capital Campaign will construct a spirituality center and a retirement home for our beloved priests. Parishes will also keep a portion of the campaign contributions to meet local parish needs. We are a vibrant community of believers in Jesus Christ fully committed to His teachings given to us through Holy Scripture and the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, and the Lord is adding to our numbers daily. Your presence is welcomed and appreciated here in the Diocese of Arlington. Come and join us in worship, in charitable outreach and in living praise of our God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit! Welcome to the Diocese of Arlington! Most Reverend Paul S. Loverde Bishop of Arlington
